The ǁKaras Mountains of southern Namibia are among the most ancient geological formations on the African continent. Scientific research has dated the metavolcanic rocks of the ǁKaras region to the Mesoproterozoic era — making these mountains approximately 1.1 to 1.2 billion years old. They formed as part of the ancient Namaqua-Natal Metamorphic Province, a vast tectonic event that shaped southern Africa over hundreds of millions of years.The Great Karas Mountains rise to 2,206 metres at their highest peak, Mt. Schroffenstein. These are not ordinary hills — they are the roots of a supercontinent.
